Bank of Uganda Warns Against Accepting Notes with Other Person or Institution Design

Members of the public have been instructed by the Bank of Uganda to only accept notes with features designed by it and not any other person or institution.

This basically puts a prohibition on banknotes that have been written on or spoiled in any way.

The BoU Governor, Emmanuel Mutebile in a statement he said that the Bank has noted with concern the several social media postings circulating images of Uganda’s currency notes with hand written political campaign messages.

He added that this is to warn members of the public that stamping, writing and/or markings on currency notes affects the security features that are useful in establishing the genuineness of the genuine currency notes.

He further said that "persons involved with spoiling and/or those accepting ruined notes risk losing value of their banknotes."

This follows a trend on social media where photos of banknotes with political messages were fast becoming common.

The trending messages were like "Vote Bobi Wine 2021" and "Vote Museveni 2021."

This means that Ugandans that have such money will lose it. It also tells others not to take it in the course of carrying out their businesses. It can also shorten the lifespan of the currency.
