Airtel-Safaricom Market Competition

Airtel Kenya is considering lowering the price of data bundles further in response to a similar decision by market leader Safaricom, a move that is considered to strengthen price war in the telecommunication sector.

Airtel Africa Chief Executive Raghunath Mandava in a recent conference said his team is watching carefully the move by Safaricom and will do “whatever is applicable” to satisfy Kenyan customers.

He added that in the last few years they have been growing quite aggressively in Kenya, and believes that they have built a strong trust to their customers through their right pricing.

Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, all delivered double-digit growth across voice, data, and Airtel Money, making it crucial for Airtel group.

Airtel’s pricing is relatively cheaper than Safaricom’s. For example, a customer on Airtel gets 6GB to use for seven days using Sh500 while that of Safaricom gets 3GB over the same period with the same amount.
