Meru County Assembly Pushes for Governor Mwangaza’s Removal in Impeachment Hearing

On Monday, the Senate chambers were abuzz as members of the Meru County Assembly
(MCAs) made their case for the removal of Governor Kawira Mwangaza. This marks the third
impeachment motion against Mwangaza in just two years.

The Assembly’s team, determined to make their case count after two previous failures. Eight
lawyers and two key witnesses were lined up to present a comprehensive case against the
governor, aiming to avoid a third unsuccessful attempt.
Central to the MCAs’ accusations is Mwangaza’s alleged failure to appoint crucial board
chairpersons. The governor is accused of neglecting to fill these positions for the Meru County
Revenue Board, the Meru Microfinance Corporation, the Meru Youth Service Board, and the
Meru County Investment and Development Corporation Board. The Assembly argues that these
vacancies have hindered essential functions and oversight within the county’s administrative
framework.

Another significant point of contention is the governor’s financial management practices.
Mwangaza’s team faced scrutiny over their use of a manual payroll system, which they used to
handle personnel emoluments amounting to Ksh. 102.94 million. Furthermore, questions were
raised about the continued payment of full salary and benefits to Kiambi Christus Manyara, a
public communication officer who remains in remand.

As the hearing progressed, the MCAs fervently urged the senators to give serious consideration
to their case. They emphasized that the repeated impeachment motions are not mere coincidences
but reflect persistent and serious issues that warrant the governor’s removal from office.
The outcome of this hearing could have significant implications for Meru County’s governance
and stability. The Senate’s decision will be closely watched as it determines whether Governor
Mwangaza’s tenure will continue or if new leadership will be ushered in.
