Haiti’s Prime Minister, Garry Conille, narrowly escaped harm on Monday when gangs opened
fire near a hospital he was visiting, a government source told AFP. This incident comes as the
nation struggles to restore stability following months of gang-related violence
Prime Minister Conille, who assumed office in June, was leaving a hospital in a gang-controlled
area of Port-au-Prince when gunmen began firing automatic weapons. Conille, accompanied by
Haitian police and members of a UN-backed Kenyan security force, managed to flee the area
unharmed. Video footage captured the chaotic scene, showing police officers scrambling for
cover as shot rang out.it remains unclear if there were any injuries.
The hospital, which had been under gang control since February, was reclaimed by police in
early July. Despite this success, criminal groups still control approximately 80 percent of Port-
au-Prince. Residents in these areas face constant threats of murder, rape, and kidnapping for
ransom
In response to the violence, hundreds of Kenyan police officers have been deployed in Haiti’s
capital. This deployment is part of an international effort to bring stability to a country attack by
political, social, and economic turmoil.
Prime Minister Conille has pledged to restore state authority and bring order to the troubled
nation. He was appointed as part of an interim government following the resignation of his
unpopular and unelected predecessor, Ariel Henry
The latest attack highlights the severe security challenges facing Haiti and underscores the
urgency of domestic efforts to stabilize the country. Prime Minister Conille’s escape without
injury is a fortunate outcome in a nation where violence continues to disrupt daily life and
governance.
