Gen 27:1-29
This story compares Jacob and Esau of how one can receive a blessing. Jacob did not have any condition for him to receive a blessing though he eventually received the blessing. If we learn how Jacob received the blessing and emulate the same, then, we can live a blessed spiritual life.
1. Only Obey My Voice My Son
According to the promise of God to Rebekah, the elder was to serve the younger implying that Jacob was to receive the blessing. Since Jacob didn’t have any condition to receive the blessing, he didn’t want the blessing. But the mother Rebekah showed him how to receive the blessing.
The first condition was for him was to only obey her voice. Whether it matches with the thought of Jacob or not, he has to obey the voice of Rebekah and do as instructed. Just like in John 2, Jesus was able to work when the servants could obey His voice in the wedding at Cana.
2. Who Can Obey Only the Voice of Mother Rebekah?
Not everyone is able to obey the voice of mother Rebecca who is the image of Jesus Christ except those who know that if they listen to their own voice they cannot help but fail.
The second condition for him to receive the blessing is to go to the father Isaac who is the image of God with only what mother Rebekah has prepared. It needs to be 100% what mother Rebekah has prepared for him. She prepared the clothes (raiment) of Esau and covered his image.
Genesis 27:15. And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son:
The clothes represent righteousness. Many people want to go before God with their righteousness not knowing our righteousness is like filthy rags.
If Jacob had gone to Isaac with his clothes which is his own righteousness he would be cursed. It was not upon Jacob to prepare the righteousness but mother Rebekah had prepared for him. Jacob also had a smooth skin representing our lacking as in
Genesis 27:16. And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck:
Mother Rebekah prepared the skins of the goats to cover the smooth skin of Jacob. When we look at ourselves we have a lot of lacking’s but Jesus has already prepared the skin of goat which his works to cover our lacking’s.
Rebekah also prepared the savoury food in Genesis 27:17 and she gave the savoury meat and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob…
This food was made by the death (sacrifice) of a goat. In his hand, Jacob had a sacrificed goat (death of an offering). Because we were sinners we need to carry death in our hands for us to go before God, for the wages of sin is death.
We need to come before God with the works of Jesus; the works that Jesus has already accomplished. If we go with our works we cannot help but be cursed.
3. What Do You Bring Before The Lord?
Jacob had clothes, skins of goats and savoury food (death of an offering) as he went before Isaac. He never went before Isaac with his deeds but the deeds of mother Rebekah.
The same way we cannot go before God with our deeds or works but with the deeds of Jesus. Our works/deeds are only evil continually hence God cannot receive.
Esau tried to go before the father Isaac with his own works instead of seeking guidance from the mother Rebekah of what would be best for the father Isaac.
Esau trusted in himself and thought that he could do something diligently and never so the need of the mother Rebekah.
Mother Rebekah can only work for those people who realize they cannot do anything to receive the blessing of Isaac.
Esau stood before the father Isaac with what he has done and prepared by himself. The same applies to our spiritual life; we want to live by solving our own problems instead of trusting upon Jesus (mother Rebekah).
Eventually Esau received a curse. But Jacob having realized his true image of not having any condition to receive a blessing was eventually blessed.
Thus, the condition for Jacob to receive the blessing is: First to only obey the voice of mother Rebekah. Second, it is to go before Isaac with only what the mother Rebekah has prepared and not his works. Third, he went to Isaac by faith.
Even though he is Jacob and the father Isaac doubted and wanted to feel him, he believes that he is still Esau. The same applies to us, even though your skin is covered by mother Rebekah you want to look at the situation and say that am not Esau but Jacob.
4. Gods Eyes are Dim
In Genesis 27:1, And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I.
It says that Isaac eyes were so dim that he could not see. God’s eyes are so dim that He doesn’t want to see our image; He only wants to hear your voice which is faith,
Numbers 14:28 Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you
In Numbers 23:21, He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel: the LORD his God is with him and the shout of a king is among them.
By faith if you say that you are Esau you are able to receive a blessing but if you look at the situation and say that you are Jacob then you will be cursed.
5. By Faith We Are Righteous
In the same way, Jesus has already made us righteous. If by faith you are able to say that you are righteous then you are blessed:
Romans 4:6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
But if you look at the situation and say that you are a sinner then you will be cursed and thrown into hell fire, in
Numbers 14:28, Say unto them, as truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you: as you say to the Lord so does He do unto you.
It is true that according to the situation you are a sinner but by faith Jesus who is mother Rebekah has already perfected us by His works
Hebrews 10:14 for by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
If we have Jesus in us then nothing can be impossible
Matthew 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
But when we look at the situation we will always see things as impossible. For those who don’t believe in God, they only look for a reason as to why it is always impossible. But nowhere in the Bible is it written that it will be impossible for us that believe in God.
Jacob when he looks at himself he doesn’t look like Esau, but by faith he insists that he is Esau. He never spoke about what he saw about himself but what mother Rebekah told him. If he says that he is Jacob as he looks outwardly, that’s not faith and he will be cursed.
The same way Jesus finished everything on the cross and tells us that He has sanctified and made us holy. He has perfected us and made us righteous. Are you going to say that you are Jacob representing sinners or are you going to say that you are Esau representing righteous.
To say that you are a sinner sounds honest but that’s not the Word of God. According to the promise of God, mother Rebekah who represents Jesus has already done everything for us to be righteous. Let’s not speak what we see with our eyes (the situation) but what the Word of God says.
Amen
