MACHOGU APPEARS BEFORE MPS OVER NEW FUNDING MODEL

EDUCATION Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Thursday appeared before the National Parliamentary Committee on Education led by Malava Mp. Malulu Injendi. The CS provided the background to the funding situation in public universities and TVET institutions.

CS Machogu presented a detailed description of the New funding model and the expected challenges before the committee. He also reiterated on the steps and the duration of the application process for funds and the period students are expected to report to their institutions.

The CS has also revealed that only 30% of university applicants have successfully applied for university funding days to the institutions opening date

Responding to the questions by MPs sought to know whether students will be allowed in their institutions on Monday, yet they haven’t received their scholarships or loans and have not paid fees.  Machogu  said that they will be writing a circular letter to the universities to allow students to be absorbed in the institutions.

“We will be giving the universities the funds so that they don’t say that we are admitting first-year students without the funds.” He said

The CS has said that all students who have received their admission letters should report to their respective institutions starting from next week on Monday and assured that no student should be chased away from school for lack of fees

“All students will be admitted as we are processing the funding for first-year students,” Machogu said.

With the new funding model, Ruto said needy students will get access to higher education and pull public universities out of deep debts.

The students will be sponsored either through scholarships or loans for equal opportunity in accessing university education.
