Kenya’s triple world record holder Faith Kipyegon shook off stiff competition to hand the country the first gold medal in the women’s 1500m on Tuesday in the ongoing global show at the National Athletics center in Budapest, Hungary.
Faith Kipyegon won the 1500m world athletics championship in Budapest after clocking 3.54.87, beating Ethiopian Diribe Welteji who took silver in 3.55.69 and Sifan Hassan of Netherlands claiming bronze after clocking 3.56.00
This was Kipyegon’s third world title, having won in London and Oregon in 2017 and 2022 respectively. It was another remarkable result for the irrepressible Kipyegon in a stunning season in which she has set three world records
Kipyegon and Hassan will again face off in the 5,000m on Saturday. The bronze for Hassan capped a brave comeback after a dramatic fall earlier in the 10,000m race
In the mens race, Abel Kipsang and Reynold Cheruiyot will fly the Kenyan flag after former world champion Timothy Cheruiyot failed to make it to the finals
