Dozens hurt as police and protestors clash in Beirut

Clashes between riot police and anti-government protesters in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, have left dozens of people wounded.

The violence began as demonstrators, who had been attacked during a sit-in by masked counter-protesters, tried to move into a square near parliament.

Police fired tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon, while protesters threw stones, bottles and fireworks.

Protests over economic mismanagement by the ruling elite began in October.

Meanwhile, the interior minister ordered an inquiry into a crackdown that left dozens more wounded.

The unrest has been fuelled by anger at the ruling elite over the ailing economy and corruption.

The protests triggered the resignation of Prime Minister, Saad al-Hariri in October, but talks about a new government are deadlocked.

President Michel Aoun postponed formal consultations with parliamentary blocs, to Thursday, on who to choose as prime minister.

Mr. Hariri, who had been expected to be nominated despite withdrawing his candidacy last month, requested the delay to allow more consultation.
