5 Signs That You’re Burning Out

What are the tell-tale signs that you’re burning out? Burnout is gradual, it does not happen overnight.

Burnout is a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. Burnout leaves you feeling overwhelmed, emotionally drained and unable to cope with life’s constant demands.

If you find yourself struggling with workplace stress, you are more likely to experience burnout. A burnout may affect your day to day functioning if it’s not addressed quickly.

Burnout symptoms are a sign that something is wrong and needs to be addressed. Burnout may manifest itself in different ways. You may experience physical and mental symptoms as a sign that you are burning out.

If these symptoms are not addressed fast enough, they may escalate to a major breakdown. Ignoring them may eventually lead to burnout.

Here are some of the tell-tale signs of burnout.

1. Exhaustion

Does the thought of work make you sick? When you find yourself feeling tired all the time, it is a clear sign that you are burning out. You may be exhausted physically, mentally or emotionally.

Do you find yourself dreading to go to work every morning? Sometimes, you may find yourself having little energy to get your work done. This could be a sign that you are exhausted and are burning out.

2. Poor Performance

Burnout mainly affects daily tasks. When experiencing burnout, you feel negative about tasks. This leads to poor performance in your work because you have difficulty concentrating.

You may also compare your work performance now to the previous years. This way, you may be able to establish whether you’re burnt out or not.

3. Physical Ailments

In some cases, burnout manifests physically. You may find yourself experiencing physical ailments as a sign that you are burning out.

Some of these physical ailments may include headaches, insomnia, anxiety and gastrointestinal problems. These could be physical indicators of burnout.

4. Negative Thoughts

Are you constantly having negative thoughts? Burnout can lead to overthinking. You may find yourself battling catastrophic thoughts where everything seems difficult.

You may find yourself thinking that you cannot do that job anymore or that you cannot make it through. These thoughts are a strong indicator that you are burning out and you need to take a break.

5. Loss of Focus

Do you have trouble focusing on the bigger picture? You may find it difficult to concentrate on your work in a state of burn out. When working under pressure, you may become overwhelmed and lose focus on your goals.

When you’re stressed, you find yourself losing interest in your role and focusing becomes a big problem.

Burnout Is Not the End

While burnout may seem like the end, it is not the end. There are several ways to get out of it. Get enough rest, eat right and do some exercise. This goes a long way in ensuring that you recover from burnout.

Go back to not neglecting yourself and giving yourself the care that you deserve. This way, you will be able to get over any symptoms of burnout that you may be having.
