M-Pesa Foundation Commissions KES 115 Million School Renovation Projects in Lamu County.

The M-Pesa Foundation has launched education infrastructure projects worth KES 115 million in Lamu County, aimed at improving learning environments and supporting the development of digital skills among pupils. The projects, which are part of the Foundation’s Citizens of the Future programme, were unveiled at Maisha Masha Primary School in Lamu West and Mtangawanda Primary School in Lamu East.

At Maisha Masha Primary School in Witu, the Foundation is investing KES 70 million to fund the construction of 12 new classrooms, a modern kitchen, a science laboratory, and a 40-seater ICT laboratory to support digital learning. The project also includes the drilling of a borehole and installation of a water kiosk to provide a reliable water supply for both the school and the surrounding community. The upgrades are expected to significantly ease congestion in the school and accommodate the increasing number of learners, including those in early childhood education.

Meanwhile, in Mtangawanda Primary School in Faza, Lamu East Sub-County, the Foundation will spend KES 45 million to construct and equip classrooms for Grade 1 to 9 learners. The school will also benefit from a new ECDE block, an administration building, and an ICT lab. Similar to the Witu project, the Foundation will drill a borehole to tackle the persistent water shortage in the area.

Speaking during the commissioning, M-Pesa Foundation Trustee Patricia Ithau reiterated the Foundation’s commitment to supporting education as a key pillar in community development. She emphasized that through partnerships and targeted investments, the Foundation is working to create long-lasting change in the education sector by providing students with the tools and infrastructure they need to succeed.

Governor of Lamu County, H.E. Issa Timamy, welcomed the initiative and thanked the Foundation for its continued support, particularly in education and health. He noted that the investment in school infrastructure would help foster better learning outcomes and create a more conducive environment for pupils and teachers alike.

The M-Pesa Foundation has implemented similar projects in other counties across Kenya, including Homa Bay, Meru, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Bungoma, Baringo, Bomet, Siaya, Migori, and Vihiga. The ongoing efforts reflect the Foundation’s broader mission to improve access to quality education and digital opportunities for learners in underserved communities across the country.
