PARLIAMENT FORMS A SPECIAL COMMITTEE TO PROBE WORLD COIN OPERATIONS IN KENYA

The speaker of The National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has announced the formation of a Joint committee to investigate the activities of the crypto-currency project World coin and table a report to the House within 42 days.

The team will be led by Hon Narok West MP Gabriel and comprises of 15 members-five members each drawn from the departmental committees on Administration and Internal Security, Communication, Information and Innovation and Tourism and Wildlife.

“I want to inform you that each of the three committees has nominated five members from their respective memberships,” Wetang’ula stated.

 Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki and his counterpart for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy Eliud Owalo who were scheduled to appear before MPs for a second time to clarify how the company was registered, whether the data collected amounted to a breach of security and what measures the government has put in place to avoid a recurrence will now appear before this commitee.

 “In view of the foregoing, Hon members, the two Cabinet Secretaries that were scheduled to appear tomorrow before this House, will instead appear before the Joint Committee to provide information on the matter.” He said.

Members of the committee will include Mburu Kahangara (Lari), Caroline Ng’elechei (Elgeyo Marakwet) Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay Town),Sara Korere (Laikipia North), John Kiarie (Dagoretti South), Geoffrey Wandeto (Tetu), Gideon Kimaiyo (Keiyo South), Shakeel Shabbir (Kisumu East),  Nominated Irene Mayaka, Kareke Mbiuki (Maara), Geoffrey Ruku (Mbeere North), Edwin Gichuki (Mathioya), Captain Ruweida Obo (Lamu East) and Innocent Maino Mugabe (Likuyani).

The Joint Committee is set to examine on the operations of World coin in Kenya. During its investigations, the committee will be expected to also meet various ministries, departments and agencies
