Several families from Mwea sub-county in Embu who come from poor backgrounds or with persons living with disability are set to benefit from new houses and toilets in their homes in order to enable them to live decent lives.
This is after a well-up family from Musingini in Mwea sub-county Embu county, which lives in the United States commenced a process of building houses and toilets for the families.
Dr Mutua Ngumbi who is running the project said he was born in this area and the majority of those living in makeshift houses are people who schooled together and since he has the capacity that is why he decided to start the project as a way of giving back to society urging other locals from the area and abroad who are well up to consider reflecting the same to their neighbours who are living in such houses due to poverty levels.
Ngumbi said he will consider expanding the project to other areas outside Mwea sub-county in order to reach more people, further adding that the project will first give priority to people living with disability, the aged and most needy.
Terry Muathe Mutua the wife to Mr Ngumbi said their passion is to see every person live in a decent house.
“Our passion is to help as a family, we don’t want to publicise ourselves and there is nothing we are targeting, we want to help and bring dignity to the lives of these people,” she said.
Reginah Mueke who lives in a single room together with her five children has expressed her happiness saying now she will be able to live well with her family since her husband abandoned them.
Ms Mueke stated that despite having many challenges, she lives with one of her sons who has a disability and that she can’t live far from him since she needs her care saying this has affected their lives because she can’t work.
She further lauded the family for their action to rescue them from such a situation urging other well-wishers to follow suit.
Dominic Nzinga Mwatu who has already benefited wih a toilet said the status of the toilet they have been using was in bad taste and many times they preferred going to bushes to relieve themselves.
Nzinga said the move by the family is an initiative that should be emulated by all people and by those who are well-up so that many families can benefit.
