Kingi: We must now increase our abilities to generate our own revenues

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, while speaking on Wednesday during the official opening of the devolution conference in Eldoret, stated that the national government has disbursed a total of Sh3.3 trillion to the counties over the last 10 years, where he argued that the amount was way higher than the Sh289 billion which the devolved units have so far managed to generate in the same period

“We must now increase our abilities to generate our own revenues to avoid overreliance on the exchequer,” he said.

He also commended President William Ruto for ensuring the timely release of funds even as he challenged governors to come up with regulations to seal corruption loopholes so that funds allocated are put to good use.

“After 10 years of practical implementation, it is now an indication that devolution is ready for a new course in fulfilment of the dreams of Kenyans,” he remarked

He also added that to deepen accountability, counties must come up with stringent measures to deter corruption and ensure that issues flagged by the Auditor General and Senate committees are addressed.

Kingi also appreciated the role played by counties in the delivery of service to the citizenry noting devolution has left clear footprints in our region
