Sports cabinet secretary, Ababu Namwaba has maintained that the issues raised against him were not substantive. Ababu who was summoned by parliament to explain the allegations of failed leadership in his ministry said he was not aware of any joyriders being part of an official delegation accompanying officials to events.
Ababu had a hard time in parliament as the legislators reprimanded him and was forced to apologize after writing a protest letter to parliament against his summons he received to appear before the house. According to the MPs the protest letter which was also copied to both the speakers of the house was an abuse to the independence of the house. The protest letter claimed that parliament was relying on hearsay.
Asked on whether he will resign, the Cs said that he is contented with the work he is doing and there is no valid reason for his resignation.
“I am performing well as the Youth and Sports CS. When I walked into this Ministry 10 months ago as CS, I inherited an arena that was in a total mess. I believe Mrs. Speaker that there is absolutely no sufficient ground that would cause my resignation because I’m performing exemplary well as the CS in charge of this ministry.”
Responding to the question by deputy speaker concerning the Talanta Hela Initiative, the CS said that it is not yet ready for launch because of challenges with the completion of the screening room but assured members that it will be ready by September 4th.
Namwamba has faced strong criticism for, allegedly failing to perform his mandated responsibilities, not showing concern for the welfare of athletes, and improperly utilizing privileges afforded to him by his position.
He has also been criticized for allegedly failing to flag off and receive back athletes representing Kenya in international sporting events.
